frustrating to understand

Bought this for our son's 7th birthday. He follows written and visual directions well, but found this to be way too difficult on his own. Even my husband and I had a very difficult time with some of the patterns...giving up on a few before even finishing. Cute idea with the colored paper, but needs simpler patterns and much easier directions if to be for ages 6+
